Czech Government Approves Increase in Defense Spending to 3% of GDP by 2030

07.03.2025

The Czech Republic is set to significantly increase its defense spending. The government has approved a Ministry of Defense plan to gradually raise the defense budget to at least 3% of GDP by 2030. This move reflects the growing security threats in Europe and the urgent need to modernize the Czech Armed Forces.

From 2026, the defense budget will see a steady increase:
2026: at least 2.2% of GDP
2027–2030: annual increases of 0.2% of GDP, reaching 3% of GDP by 2030

This increase will allow the Czech Republic not only to meet its NATO commitments but also to continue the most extensive modernization of the Czech Armed Forces in history. The country will invest in advanced combat systems, including CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, 5th-generation F-35 aircraft, and Embraer C-390 transport aircraft.

“The alliance commitment of spending 2% of GDP on defense is simply not enough. The security situation in Europe continues to deteriorate, and we cannot realistically expect improvement anytime soon. The Czech Republic must strengthen its defense capabilities,” stated Defense Minister Jana Černochová.

Beyond modernizing military hardware, the increased funding will be allocated to munition stockpiles, infrastructure improvements, and personnel development, all essential for implementing these upgrades. Another crucial aspect is Host Nation Support (HNS), ensuring the Czech Republic can accommodate and support allied forces on its territory.

In response to evolving security challenges, NATO will approve new Capability Targets (CTs) this year, focusing on strengthening land forces, air and missile defense, command and control systems, and logistics capacities.

This strategic decision is aimed at ensuring long-term stability of the defense budget and eliminating the internal defense investment gap, which has accumulated to hundreds of billions of Czech koruna over the past two decades. Investing in defense is not only about security but also about driving innovation and strengthening the economy through technological advancements.
